(EP) 14. The Smartphone Sāgā …!

The wall clock went waning,
While we were willingly lost in its taming;
The alarm in the time piece stopped buzzing,
While we were willingly lost in its snoozing!

The photographic memory went down tumbling,
While we were willingly lost in its storage juggling;
It royally outmoded the fun and frolic of recalling,
While we were willingly lost in its jackalling!

FM radio, his and her entertainment, went missing,
While we were willingly lost in its cunning kissing;
The calculator, for big multiplications, went thrashing,
While we were willingly lost in its subtle cashing.

With the lens it produced, the camera went crushing,
With the new music file formats, the tape, CD ... all went smashing;
Down the memory lane went the diary disappearing,
While we were willingly lost in its tapering and tampering.

With its invention, the land-line started stopping ringing,
It even started stopping the Indian 'Mangala Harati' rendering;
It suggests by listening to us - open privacy laundering,
While we were willingly lost in its all-invasive plundering.

It engulfed the calender, books, letters, note-taking,
Photos, videos, telegrams, groceries, banking,
Newspaper, magazine, movies and all documenting,
While we were willingly lost in its eternal capture-all hunting!

It swallowed tickets, templates, wishes, temples, worshipping,
Remote, switches, messaging, gaming, typing,
Classes, texts, notes, handwriting, and all learning,
While we were willingly lost in its smart churning!

Still, let's realise, it cares an iota,
Irrespective of Sony, Mahogany, Parata or Toyota;
It penetrates anywhere; and with AI in, be ready,
It has already scripted even your dupe's parody!

Every innovation brings with it merits and demerits,
Our choice to use or misuse will operate our spirits;
A machine is a machine that can't replace any relationship,
So is a SMARTPHONE that can't replace any kinship!

Childhood, youth and middle age are keen stages of learning. I believe, the unlearning is a way to learn as we move forward from here, just as a satellite would detach itself from a few components to reach its destination. In this process, we might leave a few footsteps! Hence the effort to store a few ideas in English, Telugu and Hindi.
