20. You Can Sleep 😴

Words are (un)pleasant Gods
If not known, we’re at odds;
The pleasing ones always bless
The displeasing ones do curse!

Some people like the word play
As words themselves offer the wordplay;
Spelling, meaning, pronunciation and usage,
All stylishly embellish the English language.

Once someone asked me three words … to spell,
So intriguing was the game that it did cast a spell;
He asked me ‘pencil’, I spelt; then ‘pen’, I spelt,
He said, ‘wrong’; ‘it’s definitely correct,’ I felt.

‘Wrong,’ invariably he went on insisting,
‘It’s correct. Definitely correct,’ I went on persisting;
Then he explained, ‘The third word is WRONG’
Then I followed why my reply was wrong!

Today, my students in 8J asked me to pick and say it,
Which one, ‘You am sleep’ or ‘You can sleep’, is correct?
When I said that it should be ‘You can sleep’,
They all slept in sync, surprising me with their shortest nap!

Later, I got to know that they were miming a meme,
Couldn’t help appreciate their taming of the time;
When words and action come together,
With no misgivings, we can follow both or either!

Childhood, youth and middle age are keen stages of learning. I believe, the unlearning is a way to learn as we move forward from here, just as a satellite would detach itself from a few components to reach its destination. In this process, we might leave a few footsteps! Hence the effort to store a few ideas in English, Telugu and Hindi.
